MATTHEWS – The N.C. Department of Transportation and the town of Matthews will host a public meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 29 to present information on proposed intersection improvements to a section of N.C. Highway 51, also known as Matthews Township Parkway, between Matthews-Mint Hill and Phillips roads.

The meeting will be from 5-7:30 p.m. at Matthews Town Hall, 232 Matthews Station St. Residents can attend any time during those hours to speak with N.C. DOT and town representatives. There will not be a formal presentation.

The project proposes to improve this section of Highway 51 to enhance safety, reduce crashes and help traffic flow more efficiently by extending the second northbound lane of Highway 51 to Phillips Road and adding a northbound U-turn near Reid Harkey Drive, allowing safe movement for motorists to access Highway 51 South. Construction is expected to begin in fall 2014 and take three months to complete.
