RALEIGH — The movement against policies approved by the Republican-led North Carolina legislature is returning to Raleigh to pressure Gov. Pat McCrory to convene a special session on Medicaid and unemployment benefits.
The state NAACP chapter and allied groups plan a Monday afternoon rally in another version of the protests that led to the arrest of hundreds of peaceful protesters during the spring and summer.
The groups want lawmakers to restore unemployment benefits reduced this year and to expand Medicaid to cover hundreds of thousands of additional people, as the federal health care overhaul allows.
The NAACP says it’s also going to court Monday to fight for its original choice for the protest on the old state Capitol grounds. The demonstration was instead scheduled for the mall behind the Legislative Building.
