CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg Mill is getting closer to its multifamily rebirth, as Mecklenburg County has begun issuing building permits to Boston-based, nonprofit The Community Builders for work at the mill in NoDa.

The county on Monday issued four building permits, valued at just more than $8 million, for construction at Mecklenburg Mill. Only one permit was valued at more than $1 million – $7.9 million – and was for rehabilitation work of the mill building itself. The other four permits were for a picnic shelter, a trash enclosure and two retaining walls, according to the county’s permits database.

Once finished, the $12 million project will have made way for 48 multifamily units at the mill. NorSouth Constructs, based in Savannah, Ga., is the general contractor on the project, according to the permits. Construction at the mill is set to be finished within the next year, said Rosa Estrada, project manager with The Community Builders.

The 48 units to be inserted at the mill will range in square footage from 428 for the smallest studio to 1,216 for larger two-bedroom units, Estrada said. There isn’t any word yet on what rents are likely to be.
