MARION — Officials say at least eight workers were hurt when scaffolding collapsed at a McDowell County school.

The collapse occurred late Monday morning at McDowell Senior High School in Marion.

Authorities say more than a dozen workers were on the scaffolding when it fell. Some of them fell more than 30 feet.

At least two of the injured were flown to hospitals for treatment. Six others with less-serious injuries were taken to hospitals in Asheville and Marion.

There was no word on their conditions.

Crews were working on a 60,000 square foot addition to the school.

The North Carolina Labor Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Division is investigating.
