Charlotte Knights issued $25M permit for uptown ballpark

CHARLOTTE — Mecklenburg County has issued a $25 million building permit to the Charlotte Knights for construction of the third phase of the Triple-A baseball team’s $54 million uptown ballpark.

The permit was issued last week.

It’s unclear as to what Phase 3 of the project includes, as neither the Knights nor Charlotte-based Rodgers, the general contractor, returned calls. It appears, though, that at least part of the phase involves construction on the interior portion of the ballpark, because county permit records show that the latest permit is for construction on roughly 54,000 heated square feet.

Construction started in September on the ballpark, which is being built on a site bounded by Mint, Martin Luther King Jr., Graham and Fourth streets. The project is expected to be completed in 2014.

The Knights will play the 2013 season in their Fort Mill, S.C., ballpark  before making the move to uptown Charlotte.
