Beco South begins $8 million in Innovation Park renovations

CHARLOTTE — Beco South has been issued four building permits valued at more than $8 million for renovations at Innovation Park in University City.

Upfits are planned for four floors, with each upfit worth $2.1 million, for New York-based AXA Equitable, which will move into the 1.7 million-square-foot complex.

Representatives for Charlotte-based Beco did not return calls, but Mary Hopper, who is president of University City Partners and works at Innovation Park, said Tuesday that construction is taking place and that AXA expects to move in by the spring of 2013.

Hopper also said that Wells Fargo has committed to using more than 100,000 square feet in Innovation Park, forcing University City Partners to move to another building.

According to Innovation Park’s website, 700,000 square feet of space in the complex remains vacant.
