Charlotte officials mull zoning change for short-term care facilities

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Department has prepared a text amendment in response to a request that the county’s zoning provide more flexibility for short-term care facilities.

Katrina Young, zoning administrator for the planning department, presented the text amendment to the City Council during a public hearing Dec. 12. It would increase the maximum number of convalescent patients allowed to be served at one time by a facility from eight to 12.

It would also increase the number of days a patient is allowed to stay in a short-term facility to 20 unless a longer recuperation period is requested by a physician and approved by the facility.

No opponents spoke against the proposed change during the public hearing.

The text amendment still needs to be voted on by the council.
