NC jobless rate steady at 9.7 percent in April

RALEIGH — North Carolina’s unemployment rate was unchanged in April at 9.7 percent as the state added nearly 3,000 jobs.

The state Employment Security Commission reported Friday that the state’s unemployment rate was unchanged from March but noted that employers have added jobs every month this year. The national unemployment rate last month was 9 percent.

North Carolina’s unemployment rate might have been better except that governments shed 2,300 workers in April as political leaders trim spending in response to budget concerns. The greatest growth in jobs last month was in trade, transportation and utilities.

The jobless rate has fallen sharply since it was over 11 percent in April of last year. The number of people unemployed has fallen by more than 70,000 since then.
