Matthews offering grants to improve businesses’ facades

The town of Matthews today said it is launching a program to help businesses in its Downtown Overlay District spruce up their facades.

The funding can be used for canvas-style awnings; paint removal from brick surfaces; cornice and mortar repairs; masonry repairs and cleaning; repair and replacement of windows and doors; removal of false facades and other inappropriate additions; and pedestrian-friendly enhancements.

The maximum grant per project is $2,500 under the 50/50 match program.

“We are pleased that we are able to make these grant monies available to our downtown business owners,” Assistant Town Manager Jamie Justice said. “We hope that this program will encourage private investment, restoration of older buildings and the preservation of the character of our downtown district.”

Those interested in the grants can get more details and an application at matthewsnc.com.
