Hiring Report: Carowinds ramps up for 2011 season

Since the middle of this month, Carowinds amusement and water park has filled about 70 percent of its annual 2,100 seasonal positions, the majority of which were filled during a job fair Saturday, said Sandy Crawford, director of human resources.

But positions are still open as the park prepares to open April 2 for its 2011 season.

The Mecklenburg Times asked Crawford about the jobs at the 377-acre park, which is just south of Charlotte in Fort Mill, S.C.

What kinds of jobs are still available?

The positions are in merchandise, games, food, aquatics, entertainment, park services and marketing.

What’s the pay range?

$7.25 to $11 (an hour)

How long will these jobs last?

Until Oct. 30. We’re weekends only until Memorial (Day) week, then we go full season (seven days a week) and then in August when kids return to school we go back to weekends only.

Outside of seasonal hiring, how many full-time employees does the park have year-round?

Ninety-eight, including security and maintenance.

Have hiring trends at Carowinds changed because of the recession?

We’re hiring the same amount of seasonal employees, but the diversity has changed. Typically about 35 percent are over 18, and 65 percent are under 18. But of that 35 percent over 18, the age span has increased a good bit. Our oldest worker is 83, so we have some people who are retired and they come work for us. It gives them something to fill their time.
