IRS probes NC youth agency for SC over-billing

FLORENCE, S.C. — A North Carolina company providing youth mentoring services in four South Carolina cities is being investigated by the Internal Revenue Service for allegedly over-billing Medicaid by more than $6 million.

Federal court documents in Florence show agents seized records from Helping Hands Youth and Family Services in Columbia and Conway. The North Carolina company also has offices in Rock Hill and Georgetown.

The owner, Truman Lewis of Charlotte, could not immediately be reached for comment. The company’s phone went to voicemail where a recording said the mailbox was full. Calls today to the company’s four South Carolina locations were all answered by recordings.

No charges have been filed.

The investigation was first reported by The Sun News of Myrtle Beach.
