Horizon Lines’ Five Star Express departs from China

Horizon Lines said a ship left Shanghai Wednesday for Los Angeles as part of the inaugural voyage of its new trans-Pacific Five Star Express service.

The Horizon Hawk is slated to arrive in Los Angeles Dec. 26 before sailing to Oakland, Calif., and returning to Guam and China as part of its regular port rotation.

Last month, Charlotte-based Horizon announced that it was launching express intermodal container service to inland U.S. cities.

Horizon, a domestic ocean-shipping and integrated-logistics company, will also offer express inland service to Atlanta, Charlotte, Chicago and Memphis, Tenn.

Horizon plans to expand the inland express network throughout the United States next year.

On Friday, the company said that now that the Five Star Express service is operational,  Brian Taylor, in addition to his international services responsibilities, is assuming the newly created role of chief commercial officer.

The company operates a fleet of 20 U.S.-flag containerships and five port terminals linking the continental United States with Alaska, Hawaii, Guam, Micronesia and Puerto Rico.
