West of Interstate 77, W.T. Harris Boulevard is blanketed in retail. An outdoor store? Check. An electronics store? Check. A Christian bookstore? Check. And then there’s Northlake Mall.
Northlake Mall opened in 2005 in north Charlotte, an area that seemed primed for residential growth. But just a couple of years after the mall opened, the Great Recession came on the scene. According to Andy Misiaveg, a partner in the Charlotte office of the Atlanta-based Shopping Center Group, the mall didn’t have time to solidify its tenant mix before the economy tanked.
When Chicago-based Pasquinelli Homebuilding filed for bankruptcy in April, local subsidiary Portrait Homes was unable to finish a 30 acre site development for townhomes near NorthLake Mall.

Darrell Boyette’s cigar shop, Tinderbox, is in Overstreet Mall, a collection of stores inside some of uptown’s high-rise buildings.
