MATTHEWS – The Polo Club at Weddington is growing by 16 condominiums, according to information from Mecklenburg County records. The widening of Independence Boulevard has extinguished some Charlotte businesses, thanks to the impact the construction has had on traffic. Plans call for Independence to be widened in Matthews, too, raising concerns about whether the days are numbered for businesses, such as those in Windsor Square.
Roughly 15 percent of Windsor Square shopping center in Matthews is vacant, with more than 100,000 of 658,012 leasable square feet unoccupied, according to Windsor Square's website. Come October, though, nearly all of that empty space will become home to a new tenant, JC Penney, which will lease about 85,000 square feet.
Matthews Gateway, a more than 90,000-square-foot mixed-use development on the corner of Sam Newell Road and Matthews Township Parkway, will be completed by the end of the year, according to the developer.
Liberty will tackle the risk of moving the Moore House to its new home on the edge of the Moore Road property, only a little more than 100 yards away. The company is responsible for everything: preparing the site, moving the house, and potentially most laborious, repairing any damages that result from the move.

Miami-based Lennar Homes this week opened a model home at the Pleasant Ridge development in Matthews. The 36-home community will offer homes ranging from 3,500 to 4,300 square feet apiece and come with 0.5 to 0.75 of an acre. Prices start at $350,000.
