Jobs for highly paid McCrory staffers never posted (access required)

Gov. Pat McCrory says a pair of 24-year-old campaign staffers landed senior-level jobs in his administration because they were the most qualified applicants, beating out older candidates. But the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, where Matthew McKillip and Ricky Diaz got big promotions and raises after only a few weeks of government service, has been unable to provide any evidence their positions were ever advertised to other potential applicants or that other candidates were considered.

N.C. protesters rally to keep pressure on lawmakers (access required)

Civil rights activists focused squarely on North Carolina's Republican elected officials Wednesday as they used rallies across the state marking the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington to criticize GOP policies. The state chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People led "Take the Dream Home" protests throughout the state, scheduling them in each of the state's 13 congressional districts — from Elizabeth City to Sylva and places in between.

But how North Carolina cut in line this summer for 2016 is riling up its close neighbor because the primary would bump up against South Carolina's prized first-in-the-South designation, threatening its influence.
