CHARLOTTE – Mecklenburg County has issued a building permit, valued at about $9.7 million, to for work on its 62,000-square-foot science center.

The science center is being added to the JCSU campus to increase the school’s capacity in its College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, according to the university’s website. The building will house four new education centers coming to JCSU: The Center for Renewable Energy, The Center for Medical Informatics, The Center for Analytics and The Center for Bioinformatics.

The center has been designed to have three floors open to the public, with a semi-private basement, according to the JCSU website. It also will have an open atrium, a classroom and administrative wing with labs and faculty offices, as well as a 250-seat lecture hall.

Cincinnati-based Messer Construction is the general contractor working on the project, according to county records.
