CHARLOTTE — Sitting around unused on Lester Street, Amay James Recreation Center last week popped up in Mecklenburg County’s building permits database, and it appears that a more than $200,000 renovation project is planned at the Reid Park facility.
The county’s plans for the center weren’t immediately clear, and the county and general contractor Kernersville-based AAR of North Carolina could not be immediately reached for comment. But according to news reports, the center has been shuttered for roughly two years.
According to the Amay James page on the county’s website, the county-owned recreation center was closed because of “drastic Mecklenburg County budget cuts.”
