From groceries to garments: Former Winn-Dixie in University City to become apparel store

CHARLOTTE — Following a $267,000 upfit, second-hand apparel store Plato’s Closet is expected to move into a former Winn-Dixie roughly a mile away from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Pinehurst-based Primax Construction is the general contractor for the project at 10215 University City Blvd.

Tracy Miller, project manager for Primax, said construction began this month and is expected to wrap up before Christmas.

Plato’s Closet, which will be relocating from 9630 University City Blvd., will occupy 11,000 square feet of the former Winn-Dixie, which is owned by Charlotte-based Primax Properties.

Primax divided the Winn-Dixie into three parts. A Monkey Joe’s and Planet Fitness occupy the other two sections of the former grocery store.

“Being a former grocery store, there is a lot of work to be done,” Miller said. “We have to rework the electrical system, and we’re upfitting the space for new heating and air.”

Plato’s Closet could open as soon as January, Miller said.
