A shopping center on Eastway Drive could see an expansion if a rezoning request is approved.
Charlotte-based Eastway Holdings LLC is requesting a rezoning to add around 18,000 square feet to the Eastway Crossing Shopping Center that sits at the corner of Eastway Drive and Central Avenue.
Sonja Sanders, a planner at the Charlotte Mecklenburg Planning Department, said that the request isn’t seeking to change the use of the site, but only to add square feet.
Normally adding square footage isn’t a rezoning issue, Sanders said, but the new plans seek to exceed to maximum square footage currently allowed at Eastway Crossing.
“There’s a cap on the square footage at the site,” Sanders said. “The existing zoning didn’t allow for them to exceed a certain square footage.”
She said Eastway Holdings aims to add 15,000 square feet to an existing building in the center and build a restaurant with a drive-thru window.
Sanders declined to predict whether the request would be approved by city council, but she said that requests for additional square footage aren’t uncommon.
The public hearing for the rezoning request is Dec. 17. Eastway Holdings wasn’t available for comment on this story.
