MATTHEWS — The grand opening for a new, 87,000-square-foot J.C. Penney store in Matthews will be held early next month, according to the Plano, Texas-based retail giant.
The event is set for 9 a.m. Oct. 5.
In January, J.C. Penney said it planned to open the Matthews location. Building permits awarded in the past year for the project total more than $3.2 million in construction, according to Mecklenburg County’s permits database.
The store, at 10101 E. Independence Blvd., is the newest tenant at the 658,000-square-foot Windsor Square Shopping Center, which is also home to Kohl’s and Sam’s Club, among other businesses.
In the past 10 years, Windsor Square has lost some big-box tenants, including Burlington Coat Factory and Media Play.
John Urban, a member of the Matthews Board of Commissioners, has said J.C. Penney could help attract other national retailers to Matthews.
