HUNTERSVILLE — Huntersville Hardwoods is spending more than $200,000 on two additions to its property on McCord Road in Huntersville.

Carolina Metal Buildings is the general contractor on the project, which calls for the addition of two air sheds on the back of the property, company President Dwight Smith said, adding that the property already has an air shed in the front.

Air sheds are an important feature of lumberyards, Smith said.

“When they bring in their lumber, they need to air-dry it before putting in the kiln,” he said. “And some people need their lumber air-dried instead of kiln-dried.”

According to Mecklenburg County’s building permit database, the lumber company is spending $116,000 apiece on two identical structures that will add more than 20,000 square feet of air-drying space to the drying yard.

Smith said he plans to start the project before the end of the month and anticipates that it will be finished right after the beginning of the year.

He said projects like this typically take around four months.
