The South Carolina Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the death of an 18-year-old construction worker who was killed Saturday at a Rock Hill job site.

Maynro Perez, of 525 Branchway Court in Charlotte, died shortly after arriving at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill, according to York County Coroner Sabrina Gist.

Perez, an employee with Indian Trail based Kempf Contracting, was injured at 10:30 a.m. while working on the Giordana Velodrome cycling center project, which is part of the mixed-use Riverwalk development along the Catawba River.

Gist said Perez was injured by a backhoe. No other details about the incident have been released.

On Monday morning, Gist said OSHA had been notified and was expected to be at the job site later that day.

Nadia Waters, office manager for Kemps, confirmed that OSHA is investigating the death. She would not release further details.

Kempf Contracting is not the same company as Kemp Construction in Sherrills Ford.
