Children’s Theater director asks City Council to phase out funding in 6 years instead of 4

The executive director of the Children’s Theater is hoping the Charlotte City Council provides more time before ending maintenance funding for the theater.

Instead of giving the theater with $95,000 a year for three years, Bruce LaRowe asked for $47,500 a year for six years.

LaRowe made the request during a public hearing Monday on the city’s proposed fiscal 2012 budget.

The theater is housed in the county-owned ImaginOn, although the city pays its maintenance bills.

LaRowe said the theater wants to have more time to find replacement funding.

The city’s budget is down 3.4 percent, from $1.73 billion in fiscal 2011 to $1.67 billion in fiscal 2012, according to the city manager’s office.

The council will consider the request from the theater, and any other potential changes, during a 4 p.m. June 1 meeting. The council is schedule to adopt a budget at its 7 p.m. June 13 meeting.
