Charlotte-based Leon Levine Foundation says it will give $2 million to help build a Discovery Place Kids in Rockingham if a campaign can raise $9.6 million by Dec. 31.

Leon Levine, founder of the Levine Foundation and chairman emeritus of Family Dollar Stores, was raised in Rockingham. The foundation was created in 1980.

The Rockingham location will be the second Discovery Place Kids in the Carolinas. The first opened in October in Huntersville.

Discovery Place, in partnership with the city of Rockingham and the Richmond County area, has launched a campaign to raise funds for the project. Discovery Place said meeting the challenge will allow for construction to begin on the museum.
