Carolinas HealthCare System today said it wants to build a $25 million psychiatric hospital in Huntersville as the demand for mental health services rises with a growing population in the Charlotte area.
Plans call for the facility to be about 53,000 square feet and feature 44 in-patient beds.
Approvals are needed from the county and state before construction can begin.
Once approved, the facility would be built on CHS-owned land near Huntersville Oaks nursing home and open in the summer of 2013.
CHS’ flagship hospital, Carolinas Medical Center, is an 874-bed facility in Charlotte.
