RALEIGH — The North Carolina Department of Revenue has sent incorrect notices to nearly 2,000 taxpayers saying they owe state taxes for 2008.
Department spokeswoman Beth Stevens says the notices went out based on erroneous information from the Internal Revenue Service about federal taxable income for some returns.
The notices mailed March 2 went to taxpayers who claimed the standard deduction for 2008 and increased their deduction for property taxes or loss after a federal disaster.
Stevens says the revenue department is correcting the problem for taxpayers who call in for help and will try to contact all other affected individuals.
Taxpayers who received a notice with a March 2 date and a “reason code” of 893 should call the revenue department’s taxpayer assistance branch, (877) 252-3052.
