CMS to lease school buildings

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is making schools that will be closed in the upcoming school year available for lease.

CMS said a bidding process will be used to choose who will lease the buildings, which are on the campuses of Davidson IB, Midwood High, Pawtuckett Elementary, Smith Language Academy, Amay James Pre-K and Wilson Middle.

Double Oaks Pre-K, Plaza Road Pre-K and Tryon Hills Pre-K centers are on also the list of buildings for lease, to give potential prekindergarten providers time to prepare should the board of education be unable to continue operating the centers, CMS said.

“We hope these schools will continue to be used by the community, even though they are no longer housing students,” Mike Raible, executive director of planning and project management for CMS, said in a statement today. “The money we expect to receive from the leases may not be substantial — it certainly won’t solve our budget shortfalls — but the leasing process will allow the buildings to continue to be used as a community resource. It’s an appropriate use for former public schools.”

Bidding will open March 4. CMS will hold meetings in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center to answer potential bidders’ questions. The first meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Room 280. The second meeting will be 5:30 p.m. Thursday in Room CH-14.

Final approval of each lease must be given by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education, and leaseholders will be responsible for maintenance and operations of the buildings.

Cash-strapped CMS expects to close 11 school buildings for the 2011-12 school year as part of a plan to slash spending.

The online application can be found here starting March 4. Questions can be e-mailed to  realestate@cms.k12.nc.us.
