CHAPEL HILL — North Carolina’s largest health insurer and the state-owned health care system based at the University of North Carolina are creating a new kind of medical practice.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and UNC Health Care said today the practice would open late this year at a site in Orange or Durham county.
The UNC Health Care physicians working at the facility would care for 5,000 Blue Cross members with chronic conditions such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, diabetes, major depression, and asthma.
Blue Cross CEO Brad Wilson says the team approach will mean doctors and nurses will have more contact with patients and be able to educate them better about how to stay healthy and avoid complications. It should also cut costs.
