The first in a series of public meetings on Mecklenburg County’s property revaluation process will take place tonight.

The meeting, for property owners in District 5, is set for 7 p.m. at Alexander Graham Middle School, 1800 Runnymede Lane, in Charlotte.

The county is in the process of reappraising properties to comply with a state law that requires revaluations of properties in a county at least every eight years.

The last reappraisal in Mecklenburg County was in 2003.

Property tax bills are expected to rise for some in the county over the last reappraisal, even though many home values plummeted thanks to the recession and foreclosure crisis.

The next meeting, for property owners in District 1, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Cornelius Town Hall, 21445 Catawba Ave.

Representatives from the the county’s assessor’s office will make a presentation on the revaluation process and how it works and will take questions from the public.

More meetings are expected but have not been announced yet.

For more information, go to the assessor’s revaluation website.
