Charlotte/Douglas International Airport was No. 6 among the busiest U.S. airports in September, with 1.57 million passengers traveling through, a 19.6 percent increase over September 2009, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
It was the largest increase of any of the top 10 busiest airports.
In September 2009, the airport was 10th.
The ranking puts Charlotte/Douglas ahead of Las Vegas, San Francisco, Phoenix and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston. From January through September, Charlotte/Douglas is seventh among busiest airports.
Although October airport rankings will not be released until next month, Charlotte/Douglas has continued to see an increase in traffic through October, according to the airport.
From January through October, 15.8 million passengers have boarded planes at the airport, up from 14.5 million during the same period last year. October accounted for nearly 1.7 million of those passengers this year, up from 1.5 million in October 2009.
