Wingate University said it will open a $4 million satellite campus in Matthews in 2013.
The new campus will be at Wingate Commons near Interstate 485 at Exit 52. It will feature a 26,000-square-foot building with 12 classrooms, a learning center and offices, said Jennifer Gaskins, director of marketing and communications.
The campus, which is replacing Wingate’s School of Graduate and Adult Education in Matthews, will offer bachelor and graduate degree programs in various fields, including education and sport administration. It will serve more than 500 students in the greater Charlotte area, Gaskins said.
Gaskins said that Wingate, a private university with more than 2,300 students, will fund the new campus through its Build the Dream Campaign.
Two additional campus buildings are scheduled to be built after the main structure in 2013 to ultimately serve up to 1,000 students. Gaskins said a construction date has not been set.
The university is based south of Charlotte in Union County.
