County poised to match 2009’s new-home permits; but ‘we are still at the bottom,’ official says
By Tara Ramsey Mecklenburg County is on track this year to match last year’s number of new-home construction permits. That could be seen as a positive at a time when the housing industry is still struggling. But when comparing the drop in new-home starts from 2006 to last year, the annual hit to the economy is more than $1.45 billion. “That’s money that’s not being made or spent here in Mecklenburg County,” said Mark Baldwin, executive vice president of the Homebuilders Association of Charlotte.
