Back into lemons? Recession-era businesses hope to stay sweet in the recovery (access required)

By Austin Light CHARLOTTE — When the economy went bottom-up, some professionals saw it as an opportunity to make lemonade from lemons. But now that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other economists are suggesting the gears of recovery are starting to turn, those recession-based businesses could find themselves struggling to keep momentum. Will their formula for success stay strong in a healthy economy, or will it turn sour? Lynn Douthett, deputy director of the U.S. Small Business Administration’s Charlotte office, said businesses that flourish in a recession do two things: seize opportunities and respond quickly to market conditions.
